What a Chimney Fire Actually Does to Your Flue — and Why a Scan Is Not Optional After One
Clay tile handles sustained heat well and sudden thermal shock badly. The damage is internal, it is invisible from both ends, and using the flue before it is scanned is the real risk.
People are relieved when a chimney fire burns itself out with no visible damage. That relief is usually premature. The consequential damage from a chimney fire happens inside the flue, is not visible from the firebox or the roof, and determines whether the chimney can be used again at all.
01Why clay tile cracks
A traditional masonry flue is lined with fired clay sections. Clay tolerates sustained heat well — that is the point of it — but it tolerates rapid temperature change badly. A chimney fire produces exactly that: a very fast rise across a material that expands unevenly as a result.
The tiles crack. Sometimes they displace. What was a continuous barrier between combustion products and the structure of your house now has openings in it.
02Why you cannot see it
You can see the bottom of the flue from the firebox and the top from the roof, and a cracked tile eight feet up in the middle is visible from neither. Nor does a cracked flue necessarily draft badly — the fireplace can appear to work perfectly.
This is the entire reason the standard requires the deeper inspection level after a chimney fire. It is not caution; it is that the damage is only findable with a camera.
03What a breach means in use
A breached liner puts combustion products in contact with whatever is behind the tile — mortar, brick, and eventually framing. It also means the next fire in that flue has a path it did not have before.
A flue with a confirmed breach should be out of service until it is corrected. That is not a scheduling preference; it is the finding that most clearly warrants stopping.
04The signs a fire occurred, if you were not there
Puffy or honeycombed creosote deposits. Discoloured or warped metal in the damper or cap. Cracked flue tiles visible from the firebox. Pieces of tile or creosote in the firebox or the ash pit. Roofing material with scorch marks near the termination.
Chimney fires frequently go unnoticed — many are slow, quiet and self-extinguishing. Any of the above found on inspection is treated as evidence one occurred, and it triggers the deeper scope.
05What correction looks like
Either a listed metal liner sized to the appliance and insulated as its listing requires, or a cast-in-place system that rebuilds the flue in place and reinforces the structure. Both restore a continuous compliant barrier.
The alloy question matters on the metal route: matched to the fuel, because acidic condensate from certain fuels attacks the wrong alloy. Specifying down to save money here is how a repair becomes a repeat repair.
If there is any evidence a chimney fire occurred, stop using the flue and have it scanned before anything else. The damage that matters cannot be seen without a camera, and it is the kind that gets worse the next time you light a fire.
