Chimney Glossary

Every chimney term we use, explained without jargon. Bookmark this — it's the same vocabulary your insurance adjuster + home inspector will use.

Creosote

Condensed wood-smoke residue on the flue wall, graded by stage — and the stage is the finding that matters.

Combustion products that condensed rather than exiting the flue. Reports should state a stage, not a presence: Stage 1 brushes out, Stage 2 is crunchy and still mechanically removable, Stage 3 is a hard glaze that sustains a chimney fire once started. A report saying only 'some creosote' has not given you a finding you can act on.

NFPA 211

The consensus standard governing chimneys, fireplaces, vents and solid-fuel appliances.

The document that defines inspection levels, clearances to combustibles, liner requirements and the conditions under which a flue should be taken out of service. It is a standard rather than a law, but it is the reference most jurisdictions, insurers and courts treat as the baseline for competent practice.

Inspection Levels

Three defined scopes — and the standard specifies when each is required, not which you prefer.

Level 1 is a visual check of readily accessible portions where nothing has changed. Level 2 adds accessible concealed areas and an internal flue scan, and is required after an operating malfunction, an external event, a chimney fire, or any change of appliance or fuel. Level 3 involves removing components to reach a suspected hazard. Choosing a level below what the trigger requires is not a cost saving; it is an incomplete inspection.

Flue

The passage carrying combustion products out — one appliance, one flue, correctly sized.

The interior channel of the chimney. Its cross-sectional area has to match what the appliance produces: oversized runs cool the gases and increase deposit, undersized cannot carry the volume and spills. Connecting two appliances to one flue is a defect in most residential configurations, not a space-saving choice.

Liner

The barrier between combustion products and the building structure. A breach takes the flue out of service.

Clay tile, listed metal, or a cast-in-place system. It contains combustion products, presents a correctly sized smooth surface, and resists chemical attack from the fuel. Establishing a breach requires an internal scan; a verdict without one is an opinion. A confirmed breach is not a scheduling item.

Crown

The sloped masonry cap on top of the chimney — the surface that fails first and costs most.

A concrete wash that sheds water away from the flue and the masonry below. It should overhang with a drip edge and be separated from the flue tile by an expansion joint. Cracks are the most common single finding on an older chimney, and sealing them annually is deferring a repair rather than performing maintenance.

Chimney Cap

A required termination component with a specification — free area, mesh opening, material.

Covers the flue opening against water, debris and animals. Its free area must exceed the flue area it covers or it restricts draft. Where a spark arrestor is required, the mesh opening size is specified — coarser does not qualify and finer clogs. Galvanized is a coated product whose failure mode is corrosion onto the tile.

Spalling

Masonry face flaking away — a moisture verdict, and it is not reversible.

Brick or stone surface breaking off, driven by water absorbed into the unit and freezing, or by mortar harder than the brick forcing damage into the face instead of the joint. Once a face has spalled it cannot be repointed back; the unit is replaced. It is the reason mortar specification is treated as a compliance matter rather than a preference.

Tuckpointing

Strictly a two-colour finishing technique; in common use, joint repair.

Used interchangeably with repointing in practice. What matters more than the term is the specification: mortar softer than the surrounding masonry, and joints raked to sound material rather than smeared over. Both are invisible at handover and both determine whether the repair lasts decades or seasons.

Damper

A flow control at the throat. It was never designed to seal and does not.

A plate that opens and closes the throat above the firebox. Its function is regulating a working fire, not sealing an idle flue — a distinction that matters because heat loss through an open chimney is a real and continuous cost that a throat damper does not address. A top-sealing damper at the outlet is the component that does.

Smoke Chamber

The transition above the damper — frequently unfinished, and among the most-missed defects.

Corbelled brickwork narrowing from the firebox throat to the flue. It should present a smooth, evenly angled surface; what is often found is raw stepped brick with open joints, which produces both turbulence and a deposit trap at the coolest point in the path. It is only found by looking above the damper, which is why it appears on internal inspections and not visual ones.

CSIA

A certification body for chimney professionals — verifiable, and worth verifying.

The Chimney Safety Institute of America certifies individuals, not companies, and maintains a public list. A certification claim is checkable in under a minute, which is exactly why claiming one falsely is a poor idea. Certification indicates training; it does not by itself indicate the scope of a given inspection.

Firebox

The chamber where combustion occurs, built to withstand it — rated brick or listed panels.

In masonry construction, firebrick laid in refractory mortar. In a factory-built fireplace, listed refractory panels matched to the model. Cracks in either are a breach in the barrier between fire and what is behind it, and in a listed assembly a cracked panel voids the listing. Common brick and ordinary mortar do not belong in a firebox.

Throat

The narrowed opening above the firebox where the damper sits.

The constriction between the firebox and the smoke chamber. Its dimensions affect draft directly, and a throat that was built wrong is a construction characteristic rather than a developed fault — which is the distinguishing question when a fireplace has always smoked rather than recently started.

Hearth

The non-combustible floor at and in front of the fireplace opening, with required dimensions.

The hearth proper is beneath the firebox; the extension projects into the room. The extension's required depth and width are set by the opening size and the appliance listing, and they exist to catch embers. Reduced or removed during a remodel is a common and consequential finding.

Thimble

The sleeved pass-through where a connector enters the chimney.

A fitting that allows a stove or appliance connector to pass through a wall into the flue while maintaining required clearance to combustibles. An unsleeved or improperly sized penetration is a direct path from flue temperatures to framing and is treated as a serious defect.

Chase

A framed enclosure around a factory-built chimney — a structure, not masonry.

Typically wood-framed and clad, housing a metal chimney system. Because it is framed rather than solid, water entering the top does not simply weather the surface — it saturates structure that cannot be inspected without opening it. Which is why the cover on top is treated as a primary water barrier.

Chase Cover

The metal top on a framed chase. Builder-grade galvanized is a known failure item.

Sheet metal sloped to shed water, with sealed collars around each flue penetration. Galvanized covers fail in a predictable sequence: coating, then rust, then water at the collars, then the framing beneath. Replacement is stainless or copper, and a cover replaced after it has leaked usually comes with framing repair attached.

Cricket

A peaked diverter on the upslope side of a chimney — required by width, not by preference.

A small structure that splits water and directs it around the stack rather than allowing it to pond against the upslope face. Its absence on a chimney wide enough to require one is a defect, and it is a frequent finding on older roofs where the detail was omitted.

Flashing

A two-part assembly at the roof junction. Both parts are required and the lap is what works.

Base or step flashing integrates with the roofing and turns up against the masonry; counter-flashing is set into a cut joint and laps down over it. Sealant applied where they meet is not a repair — it has a short service life in sun and movement, and once applied it conceals the defect while water continues to enter.

Spark Arrestor

Screening at the termination, specified by mesh opening size.

Where required, the opening size is part of the requirement. Too coarse does not satisfy it; too fine clogs with deposit and becomes the blockage. On a wood-burning flue an arrestor is an annual check item precisely because its failure mode is choking the flue it was fitted to protect.

Video Scope

Internal camera examination of the flue — the difference between a verdict and an opinion.

A camera run through the flue producing images of the interior surface. It is what establishes a liner breach, and it is what the deeper inspection level requires. A report on liner condition delivered without a scan has not examined the thing it is reporting on.

Carbon Monoxide Detector

A carbon-monoxide alarm — required where fuel-burning appliances are present.

Detects a gas with no colour or odour, produced whenever combustion is incomplete or products are not venting correctly. Placement and count are set by code and by the appliance locations. It is a last line of defence, not a substitute for verifying that the venting works — but the last line matters.

Draft

The pressure difference that moves combustion products up the flue.

Produced by the temperature difference between flue gases and outside air, and modified by stack height, flue area, terminations and the pressure of the house itself. When draft fails, the causes are enumerable — obstruction, proportion, height, or air supply — and they are distinguished by inspection rather than by guessing.

Backdraft

Flow reversal — products entering the room instead of leaving.

Occurs when the flue's draft is overcome, commonly by negative pressure in the house from exhaust equipment, or by wind at the termination, or by a flue too short or too cold. It is a safety finding, not a comfort complaint, because what comes back down includes combustion products.

Refractory Panel

A listed component of a factory-built firebox, matched to the model.

Pre-cast panels forming the walls and floor of a manufactured firebox. They are part of the tested assembly, so replacement is by manufacturer and model rather than by approximation. Where the correct panel is discontinued, the honest verdict is that the firebox has reached end of life.

Zero-Clearance Fireplace

A listed factory-built fireplace approved for installation against framing.

So named because its listing permits specified minimal clearances to combustibles — a permission that belongs to the tested assembly, not to fireplaces generally. Modifying such a unit, or substituting non-listed components into it, voids the basis on which that clearance was allowed.

Gas Valve

The control governing gas flow to the appliance — licensed work, leak-tested.

The assembly that opens and closes the fuel supply, interlocked with the pilot-proving sensor. Any work on it is licensed in Texas and concludes with a leak test. This is the component where the difference between a competent and an incompetent installation is not recoverable.

Thermopile

A multi-junction sensor generating the millivolts that hold the gas valve open.

Converts pilot-flame heat into a small voltage. Output declines with age, and below a threshold the valve closes despite a visibly lit pilot. Diagnosis is a millivolt measurement — which distinguishes replacing the correct component from replacing components in sequence.

Thermocouple

A single-junction pilot-proving sensor.

Generates a smaller voltage than a thermopile and serves the same safety purpose: proving the pilot is lit before gas is allowed to the main burner. The classic failure signature is a pilot that holds while the knob is depressed and drops the moment it is released.

Parging

A refractory coating applied to smooth a rough smoke chamber.

Fills the steps and voids of raw corbelled brickwork to produce an even transition. It corrects a surface problem. Where the chamber's geometry itself is wrong rather than merely rough, a coating over the wrong shape does not fix the draft and the correct answer is a rebuild.

Tile Relining

Replacing or restoring clay flue tiles within an existing chimney.

One route to restoring a compliant flue where tiles are cracked or displaced. In practice a listed metal liner or a cast-in-place system is more often specified, because both address the full length continuously rather than replacing individual units within a structure that has already moved.

Fireback

A cast plate at the rear of the firebox — protective as well as decorative.

Takes direct thermal load off the masonry it covers and radiates heat forward. It is not a repair: fitted over already-cracked brick it conceals a defect without addressing it, which is why it should only go in front of sound masonry.

Flue Tile

The clay liner units forming a traditional masonry flue.

Fired clay sections stacked with refractory joints. They resist heat well and tolerate rapid thermal shock poorly — which is why a chimney fire commonly cracks them, and why an internal scan is required after one. Cracked tile is a breach regardless of how sound the exterior masonry appears.

Ash Dump

An opening in the firebox floor leading to a pit below.

Allows ash to be swept into a chamber for later removal through a cleanout door. Its door should close properly: an open dump is an uncontrolled air path affecting draft, and a route for embers into a space nobody is watching.

Level 1 Inspection

The routine visual scope — appropriate only when nothing has changed.

Examination of readily accessible portions of the chimney and appliance, verifying basic soundness and absence of obstruction. It is the correct scope for an unchanged system in continued service under the same conditions, and the wrong scope after any triggering event.

Level 2 Inspection

Adds accessible concealed areas and an internal flue scan — required, not optional, after specific triggers.

Everything in Level 1 plus attics, crawl spaces and basements where the chimney passes, plus a camera examination of the flue interior. Required on sale or transfer, after a chimney fire, after an external event such as a seismic or weather event, and on any change of appliance or fuel.

Level 3 Inspection

Involves removing components to reach a suspected hazard.

Undertaken when Levels 1 or 2 indicate a serious concealed hazard that cannot otherwise be evaluated — which may mean removing masonry or part of the structure. It is destructive by definition and is only justified when the suspected condition warrants it.
