Wood Stove or Insert: A Decision Governed by Listing and Venting, Not Preference
Both are certified appliances and both require a continuous listed liner. What actually differs is where they sit, what they need around them, and what your existing structure allows.
The choice is usually presented as a matter of taste. In practice the structure you already have narrows it considerably, and the requirements both options share matter more than the differences between them.
01What they share, and it is the important part
Both are certified appliances with published emissions and efficiency figures, and both require a continuous listed liner from the appliance to the top of the chimney. Connecting either to a bare masonry flue is a common and serious error.
That liner requirement is not optional and it is a significant part of the cost of either option. A quote that omits it is not a complete quote.
02The insert: fits the opening you have
An insert is designed to sit within an existing masonry firebox, which makes it the option that uses the structure already present. Its clearances are largely satisfied by the masonry around it, and the visual result stays close to a fireplace.
The constraint is the opening. The unit has to fit the firebox dimensions you actually have, and that measurement determines the shortlist before any other consideration.
03The freestanding stove: needs floor and wall clearance
A stove stands in the room, which means its clearances to combustible walls and its floor protection requirements are live constraints on placement — set by its listing, not by preference.
In exchange it radiates from more surface area and generally heats more effectively, and it can be sited where no fireplace exists, provided a compliant vent run can be built to it.
04The honest limiting factor on both
Fuel. A certified appliance burning wet wood performs like an uncertified one, produces the deposit an uncertified one produces, and will disappoint against its published figures.
The rating describes the equipment under test conditions. It does not describe the fire you build, and no purchase decision here compensates for fuel handling.
Measure the firebox first — it usually decides the question. Budget the listed liner into either option, confirm clearances against the specific unit's listing rather than a general rule, and be realistic about fuel, because that is what determines whether you get the performance you paid for.
