Tuckpointing and Repointing: The Distinction, and Why Mortar Strength Matters More Than Either
The two terms are used interchangeably and mean different things. But the specification that actually determines whether the repair lasts is the mortar mix — and harder is worse.
These words are used loosely in the trade, and the confusion is mostly harmless. The specification that genuinely decides whether the repair survives is not which term is on the invoice — it is what mortar goes into the joint.
01What the two terms actually mean
Repointing is the functional operation: raking out deteriorated mortar to a sound depth and replacing it. Tuckpointing, strictly, is a finishing technique using two mortar colours to produce the appearance of very fine joints.
In everyday use both usually mean the former. It does not much matter, provided you and the contractor agree on what is being done — but ask, because a quote for one and an expectation of the other is a poor start.
02The specification that matters: mortar harder than the brick fails
This is the part that gets skipped. Mortar is designed to be the sacrificial element in a masonry assembly — softer than the brick, so movement and moisture damage the joint rather than the unit. A modern high-strength mix in a historic soft brick reverses that, and the brick face spalls instead.
The damage is not reversible. Repointing an older chimney with the wrong mix does more harm over a decade than leaving the failing joints alone would have.
03Depth and preparation decide whether it holds
Joints must be raked to a sound depth — enough for the new mortar to key in — and the surface cleaned and dampened appropriately before filling. A surface smear over deteriorated mortar looks correct on the day and detaches within a season or two.
This is the difference that is invisible at handover and obvious in two years, which is why it is worth asking about the raking depth before work starts.
04When repointing is the wrong purchase entirely
If the underlying cause of the deterioration is unresolved — persistent water entry from a failed crown or flashing, or structural movement — new mortar goes into a joint that is still being attacked.
Fix the water path or the movement first. Repointing is the last step in that sequence, not the first.
Agree what is being done, insist the mortar is specified softer than the masonry it sits in, ask about raking depth, and confirm the water or movement cause is resolved first. Those four questions separate a repair that lasts decades from one that lasts two winters.
